A silk scarf adds some polish to your look ––and yes, it can be worn in the winter, too. It is actually a cool accessory to incorporate to your cold-weather outfits. When the temperature drops, this teeny item might be the little extra layer that you need to stay warm. Here’s 10 ways to tie and wear this timeless accessory, whatever the season.
Note: I’m not a big fan of rules. My motto is Do as you wish. But sometimes it’s good to follow a few rules, especially when it comes to tie a scarf. First, you need to fold it properly! Trust me. It makes a huge difference in the styling. So learn how to do it. It’s easy. Take both corners into the middle and then fold it into a snake shape. This way you’ll end up with a much sleeker look.
Now, you’re ready. You can choose any of these options below. Most of the styles I show here can also be done with a neckerchief (a small square scarf).
1. The Classic
Simply place it around your neck. Take one side of the scarf and create a loop equidistant from your neck and the end of the scarf. Then pull the other end of the scarf through the loop and make a single knot. Voilà! You can position the knot in the middle or to the side. Your choice.
The Classic style done with a neckerchief.
2. The French Twist
Place the scarf in front of your neck and wrap it around the back. Loop the ends to the front and tie a double knot. Again, you can position the knot in front or to the side.
Done with a neckerchief this style as a wrapped effect.
3. The Cowgirl
Here, you need to fold the scarf in half to create a triangle. Tie the ends at the back of your neck. Pull the ends of the scarf apart of each other for a look that says I have done it in a hurry… But we know that it’s not true!
4. The Girl Scout
Fold it like the Cowgirl style but place the triangle on the back. The knot should be center in front. You can pull the knot closer to the neck or further away.

5. The Hacking Knot
For this style you’ll need a big scarf. Create an equal loop and place it around your neck. Put one hand through the loop and pull both ends of the scarf through. It’s as simple as that. You could also do like I did (see the pic below) by simply not pulling the ends all the way. Half way, make a knot and tighten it like you prefer. It creates a half bow knot.

6. Wrist and Ankle Candy

You might need help to tie it around your wrist. The knot should be on top. The ankle wrap is obviously more for summer.
7. Loose or Tied with a Pearl Necklace
With a Pearl necklace – 3C Style
Wearing a pearl necklace with a silk scarf is always chic. You can tie it if it’s windy or just let your long scarf loose around the neck. – Here, I have imitated Olivia Palermo with her inseparable iphone! Lol.
You can also wrap a pearl necklace around your silk scarf. First, drape the scarf over the back of your neck, and put the strand necklace over the scarf. Wrap the necklace around it, close in front, and double knot the scarf. See the video on Mai Tai’s blog, a resource on scarf tying.
8. Tied in Your Hair

Definitely not the warmest way to wear your silk scarf ––but it’s pretty!
9. Head Scarf

Do the Audrey Hepburn look ––it’s simple. Just wrap under the chin. Add some stunning sunglasses.

Which way do you prefer tying your silk scarf? Tell me, I’d love to hear from you.
J’adore cet article.
Seriously, if you are not wearing your silk scarves this winter you are missing out a big trend. This timeless accessory should be on your radar right now. Learn how to fold, wrap, twist and knot them like a fashion editor.
OMG We are both crazy to still be up! We are working tomorrow. Thanks sis for your lovely comment. I will write to you and Darren in a few hours. I just saw that I have missed a lot of exchanges. I was working on our DIY and sketches. Much love!
We are crazy sisters! Just trying to work out the one project 😊 I cant wait to see what you have done. You inspire me. Much love! Time to sleep, I have to get up in a bit 💗
Some good tips Domonique. I’ve never felt very comfortable wearing a scarf, I’m not sure why but you look so great in them. A lovely post. I think its probably just getting the courage to try something different.
Hello Alison. Perhaps it is because you just don’t like having something around your neck? Start with a scarf or bandana on your handbag. You might feel more comfortable that way. Have a lovely week. 😊
I remember my mom wearing scarves on her head, hair-tie style during early late 60’s & early 70’s. I’ve never seen the ankle scarf. Interesting look. I recall having scarves for men’s wearhouse in the early 70’s, too. If my memory serves me right, mine had a brass ring where the scarf was threaded. I did like the cowgirl look. No surprise there.
Such variety. Hugs from Dallas.
Hello Alan. Sorry for my late reply. There is a lot happening in my neck of the wood. You will soon read about it. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. lol! It made me laugh. No surprise indeed that you have a crush on the cowgirl style. Hugs from Montreal. 😊
What a fun post. Being a ‘woman of substance,'(isn’t that a fun term for “fat?)’ fashion isn’t something I focus on because there simply aren’t any cool clothes for people of my size. I do, however, own silk scarves that I never seem to wear. You have inspired me! Even my Baggallini can be trendy! Haha! 🤗❤️🤗❤️🤗
haha! I’ve tried the bandana thing on Walter and he not only looked very stylish, but it made for a wonderful drool bib. However, he is very clever in figuring out ways to remove it! I think I’ll have to make it tighter around his neck and tie tighter knots!
Will do! I just heard about a local company who makes bandanas for dogs that have natural bug repellant infused in them. I am definitely going to get one for Walter. He’s allergic to black fly bites. He will be adorable. I think they make them in hunter orange. He will be fashionable, bug-free and safe! Much love back!!
A great post – however obviously a typical man’s confusion here – but if the silk scarf was that one extra layer of warmth l am confused by the image of the ankle twist? What purpose is the scarf way down there for warmth on only one ankle and to boot that ladies ankles are bare as is. Or is that purely to serve as a fashion accessory?
Maybe not exactly something that would apply to myself, but it’s still fun to see how many ways you can tie a scarf. Cool post with excellent images, as always,

Yes, do adorn your bag with a scarf, Linda. It is an easy way to add color to your look. Or you might try to put a bandana on Walter! Haha… Hugs.

Haha! Purely a fashion accessory in this case and obviously a way to tie a scarf for summer time. 😊

Ah good to know. I did suspect that was the case, because if it was winter she was going to freeze, scarf or not with that choice of footwear 🙂
