Vintage no longer knows the stigma associated with pre-worn clothes. Dresses, coats, blouses and fashion accessories dating from the glorious years, and after the war, are not reserved anymore for the nostalgic of better times. Just seeing the number of shops and events focused on vintage emerging everywhere tells us these timeless pieces are trendy… Yep, they are very fashionable in addition to being eco-friendly.
But I still hear many times women saying: I’m too young or too old to wear vintage clothing. Seriously? Where that mindset come from puzzles me. I am a clear vintage fashionista; I mean I wear something vintage almost everyday and I don’t think my look is outdated. I often see young women wearing bow silk blouse, midi length skirt or other items many would consider for “mature women” and I don’t say to myself Oh- they’re playing dress up or they’re dressing like a “granny”. I strongly believe that one can and should wear whatever the heck they want regardless of their age or their size for that matter.
So if you want to sport vintage, go ahead. Even a head to toe vintage look if that’s what your heart desires. As far as I’m concerned the only thing that matter is how the person feels. That said, I personally prefer to wear one or two vintage pieces in an outfit that includes modern items. Or vice versa. For example, a contemporary shift dress with crop jeans and a chunky sweater sported with retro sunnies and a vintage floppy hat for a Sunday brunch or a 1970s leather jacket with 21st century slip dress and drop dead gorgeous hot pink earrings for a night out with the girls (see photos below).
Before I go further let me first translate this part for my French readers.
My new go-to outfit
Fall is about layering. A shift dress is the perfect item to add instant style to your jeans and wool sweater combo. It will keep you warm and cozy in a casual & chic way. Complete the outfit with some vintage accessories et voilà you’re in business.

By now you must have guessed that when you mix vintage and modern clothes you won’t look like a retro postcard. Mixing old and new items creates a different and unique look that is cool & stylish. Keep in mind that if you opt for vintage pieces you should try to style them in a contemporary way with trendy accessories. For example, instead of wearing your Chanel-like suit with kitty heels (which I like BTW) why not try with sock boots? Add a modern graphic t-shirt under the blazer, a gold choker such as this one here and some gold hoop or tassel earrings like these here and here for a fun street style look. Do the opposite with modern pieces. Go with accessories such as gloves, structure handbag, scarf, pearl necklace, leather or fur items as these pieces are associated with vintage style and will bring a touch of elegance to your look.
I cannot point out enough that these tips are no rules in the slightest, but rather guidelines based on my own experience and lifetime interest in the aesthetic of all things, including fashion.
Here are some more outfits that I styled by mixing vintage and beautiful modern clothing and accessories.
It’s a tie-waist blouse
I luuuv the feminine wrap bodice and plunging neckline of this blouse from Tobi. The rust color feels chic and the style is apt to go with a wide range of clothing. I wore it recently with crop jeans and a vintage Sonia Rykiel jacket for a casual yet sophisticated look (see post here).
For a more sultry look, I like to pair it with my black leather pencil skirt.

Fall for a floral print scarf
A scarf can go a long way towards creating stunning outfits. With his artful floral print and pointed ends, this skinny scarf is very trendy and versatile. Do a French Twist as shown here or tie the knot like I did; then just position the knot to the side and let the extra-long ends fall on your shoulders. Your choice. Either way, it will add glamour to your outfit. Instant movie star feel!

One final tip: The key to mixing vintage and modern clothes successfully is to experiment with vintage clothing of different periods (1930, 1940, 1950, etc.) in order to find the styles that make you feel good and suit your lifestyle. Afterwards, it will be easier to mix and match with your modern clothes to obtain an authentic style of your own.

You are too kind as always! Big part of styling clothes is to experiment new things and to learn to trust our judgement. Getting out of our comfort zone is the hardest part. It is much like everything else in life. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. 😀

As usual, you carry it off in style. Totally with you on the vintage — and it’s time to pull out the scarves. I only wish my earlobes could carry dangly earrings. Happy autumn, mon amie.

Thank you. Your comment means a lot to me. I have to admit, I don’t usually like big earrings and when I do put them on it is only for an hour or two. These are not as heavy as they seem though. Have a lovely week and thank you for stopping by.

Absolument d’accord .
J’adore lire ton blog! Lâche pas surtout💖

The word ‘Vintage’ itself defines a certain time period. Vintage kick is all about the togs of the previous era. But the period is not that old and long enough to take clothes as antiques. Rather in my opinion, vintage clothing is the class of finery inspired by another gear. No matter you are a man or a woman, you need to have enough knowledge about fashion in order to pick the attires of 30’s, 40’s, 50’s correctly. Also, when you are buying vintage outfits, make sure the cloth house you have chosen is a reputable one- https://xesrevolution.com/ .
