Do you really know what you mean when you say that you are going for a more “natural look” with your fashion? The term is generally thought to be positive, but even industry experts haven’t really dealt with this fact – nature basically changes its chic whenever it wants.
Every three months, a new season brings in a new look. Over a number of years, nature can change even the most pristine man-made paradise back into a beautiful jungle of asymmetry and wildlife. Over eons, our planet has changed from a volcano into an icebox into a greenhouse.
Why then, do we ever look for a static fashion?
The only ecosystems that work in nature are the ones that are in a constant state of flux. They respond to their surroundings. They migrate seamlessly with new forces entering the area. Change is met with acceptance, not resistance. Nothing seems forced – everything is in its natural state. The eye has a great deal of trouble singling out concepts that are supposed to make things beautiful – things like parallel structure and asymmetry – but somehow, everything fits.
“Change is never painful; only resistance to change is painful.” – Buddha
Why then, do you look to your wardrobe and try to force pieces together that don’t go? Why do you try to morph your body into clothing it was not meant for? Why is there so much force and so little acceptance in your fashion sense as you try desperately to copy the looks you see in your favorite fashion mags?
Here is an even better question for you to consider. Have you ever noticed how much this season’s high fashion looks deviate from the commercial looks that finally make their way into your local Neiman Marcus? What high fashion designers will never tell you (mostly because you just don’t run in their circles) is that the looks they show are not necessary meant to be worn. At least, not exactly the way they were shown to you. They are meant to be an inspiration. You are meant to use them and find your own personal style for that season.
Believe it or not, high fashion is closest to nature because of its complete irreverence concerning practical use. You cultivate your look based on what your boss likes, what your neighbors wear, and what will be acceptable at your friend’s wedding. This is not natural in the least. Yes, you want to dress properly for the occasion. I get it. But do you have to blend that much?
Granted, high fashion designers have an appreciable budget and the most beautiful fabrics in the world to work with. They also have the time to sew and perform the work of creating the concepts. However, the majority of the boredom with your wardrobe does not have anything to do with money, material or even time. It has to do with the fact that you feel stifled because of those things and what is expected of you.
“How can I ever get a look together that is fun and free?” You ask yourself; you can’t come up with an answer, so you resort to the boring brown blazer and black slacks that you wear every season.
Some of the best jewelry I have ever seen comes from bird feathers that poor Serbian artists simply picked up off the ground and attached to a necklace with a bent piece of copper. Hell, you might be able to spruce up your outfit if you just send your semiprecious stones in for a cleaning. Life is about change. If you want to be natural, then you must change. Let nature inspire you. Forget the opinions of those around. They don’t pay your bills, and they can’t give you that incredible smile you get when you put together a new, unique look that no one thought of before you.
Be yourself and have fun with your clothing. This is what fashion is all about. Let the change begin!
