Key Spring/Summer 2018 Trends

Fashion Weeks are almost over and I must say I never dreamed of the return of the 80’s and 90’s trends. I mean I enjoyed the T.V. show Friends very much. But do we really want to go back to all the bling-bling? Remember the crazy makeup and Cyndi Lauper 80s hairstyle. Yerk… I do have a photo of myself with a similar look but don’t even ask you will never see it!
Though I love the idea of a badass attitude – read, dress accordingly to OUR aesthetic desire and lifestyle. For that “feel good vibe” and practical sense that inspired a lot of designers this year I definitely say YES! So you want to wear your snickers and sweatpants to do your grocery? Go ahead, it’s trendy. Who wants to put on 3 inch heels to run some errands anyway?
Feel like exposing yourself in a sheer dress or rocking metallic and sequin in daytime? No problemo. These were ubiquitous styles in many catwalks such as Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Chanel, Paco Rabanne, Miu Miu, Fendi, Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs to name a few. There is no hiding no more nor limits. What lies beneath is revealed with confidence. After all you are a gem! But rest assured you can also adopt the transparency effect in a much more demure way. Ouf!
So what’s really trending for Spring and Summer 2018? The key trends to look for comes in pastel hues (lilac, peach, mint, baby blue, pink…), but also in bold colors such as bright yellow, red, fuschia and deep violet. Three words summarize the trends well: comfy, femininity and socio-eco-friendly.

Comfy

Athleisure, clean cut clothes, tailored denim and practical embellish shoes. It’s the Nirvana for a fashionista like me who likes relaxed, comfortable yet sophisticated clothing. I gaze in awe at Mansur Gavriel’s flats, Prada and Bottega Veneta’s low kitten heels and Salvatore Ferragamo’s block heel sandals.

Femininity: ruffles, flowers, feathers and fringes

You’ll want a ruffle asymmetric shirt or skirt and some floral prints for the warm season. Floral designs this year are either inspired from the 60s, romantic English countryside or tropical prints such as palm leaves and big flowers. These tropical motifs are the IT items to get. But hey, it’s only my opinion. I’m definitely looking for a kimono-like dress with one of these patterns. I regret it so much that I did not pre-order one flowery piece from Johanna Ortiz’s spring collection (see this post Fall’s Do: Wear Floral Print to view her collection). Tory Burch Fall/Winter 2018 Collection that was launched during New York Fashion Week was a high fashion forays into flowers as well. Any items from Burch’s collection are worth the investment. You’ll be blooming! Here are some pictures of their spring collections.
Magnificent feather pieces were also prominent on the runways, most notably at Alberta Ferretti, Rodarte, Gucci and Lanvin but also at Nina Ricci, Ann Demeulemeester, Proenza Shouler and Saint Laurent. But the eye-catching trench with fringes that was seen in Loewe’s catwalk got everyone talking. Again this season you will see fringes on clothing and bags.

Socio-Eco-Friendly

More and more brands and designers are socially and environmentally conscious as it was seen in the recent Fashion Week shows. Indeed, since 2017 many are rethinking their production cycles, taking measures to reduce their carbon footprint and assure safe labor conditions, while others like Gucci have banished the use of real fur. Thanks to Stella McCartney, Tom Ford, The Organic by John Patrick, Maria Carnejo and Diane von Furstenburg who set high standards for the industry, sustainability in fashion seems now a trendy thing. One can only hope that this trend will go mainstream. In other words, socio-eco-friendly brands have to become a fashion essential! For this to happen it’s also up to the customers who need to know about the damage of fast fashion and instead of buying new stuff all the time learn to get as much as possible out of their garments. Because ideally the fashion industry, second polluter in the world, should produce less bran new clothing!
Stay strong, stay stylish!

  1. I am all about comfy, femininity and socio-eco-friendly. Not so sure about the 90s hair coming back around. I’ve noticed on the news, their hair seems to be trending a bit bigger 🌞 I absolutely love the color trending for spring and the botanical flair. Fantastic article!

    1. Nope, Niet, Nada… You won’t see that pic! That kimono is a source of frustration right now… I definitely have to visit my friend over at Era Vintage Wear. She might be able to find something similar looking.

  2. All those gorgeous feathers reminded me of a 1920s fancy dress party I went to recently, feather boa and all. Love the comfy feminine looks in this post and some of those classy looking sandals. Great post Dominique x 🙂💕

    1. I am going nuts about the feather trends… I want some feathers on my shoes, hats, sweaters, earrings… I have to calm down otherwise I might end up looking like big bird!

  3. I am so onboard with the comfy look! I am waiting for active wear to hit the runways! It always seems to me that the fashion looks will only work for the 5′ 11″ models-when do the short chicks get some love? 🙂

  4. Now I would have loved to see that throwback pic.
I’m all about the comfy life sometimes too comfortable to actually not own a pair of heels…. yeah I know the gasp but i’m very flat footed and my feet bug me a lot so mostly I’m in flat shoes.

  6. To combine comfy with feminine elegance is my motto too! And I look forward to those floral patterns! I think I still might have a skirt with big palm leaves somewhere hidden in my wardrobe, it´s time to get that out again. 😉 Ahh – the 80´s! Being born in that decade I can not help but actually love the style and Cyndie Lauper was/is one of my heroes. 😉 Although I have to admit that I never wear anything that resembles it. LOL! 😀 But I just like the attitude! And ruffles are so not my thing, but fringes, we can talk about that 😉 I think I also have a lovely brown leather handbag with fringes somewhere hidden too – good that I seldomly part with clothes and bags, the styles return every so often it seems. 😉 Have a lovely week, Dominique, and thank you for telling us what trendy this Spring/Summer! xoxo ❤

    1. Hello Sarah. What a beautiful comment! You are so right about Cyndie Lauper’s attitude. She is definitely an Alpha woman and I do like the way she ages too. Beautiful! But the hair styles back in those days were awful. And I have one pic of myself to prouve it. I like ruffles and fringes. I was a tomboy as a child so I guess I’m trying to compensate with all the girly things. I am also a collector at heart so I keep a lot of my clothing and accessories and I often transform them because I don’t like to look like a retro postcard and updated. I am very happy that you found this post useful. Thanks again for reading me. It is always such a pleasure to read your awesome comments my friend. Have a great week. xoxo
