When Fashion and Nature Collide – November Edition

Hello!
It sleeps on our notes, gives paws on our pencil, walks on the keyboard of our computer, settles in our favorite chair and even drinks the tea in our cup… The cat is king in our houses and present in literature, painting, music, cinema and history as well. This indispensable furry friend of writers and poets is the star of our November edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide.

With the cooler weather coming we thought What better time to cozy on the sofa with a good book? Since it’s difficult to think of books without imagining a cat perched high at the top of a bookshelf or sleeping on our lap while we read, it inspired us to dedicated this issue to the cats of the great classics of literature and comics. From Bébert, Celine’s cat, to La chatte anglaise of Balzac and Garfield, the greedy and lazy feline of Jim Davis, the sources of inspiration are grand. Not surprised as the purring of the cat agrees with the loneliness and silence of the writer. I am meowing with delight with the fives feline characters and books that the team has selected and paired with Darren’s flower photos. Keep on scrolling, to find out which ones they are and see my fashion interpretation of them. Lisa’s artwork will make you purr as always.

Note: In case you’ve not seen these capsules before, the When Fashion and Nature Collide project is a monthly collaboration with two of my WP friends: Lisa of Lismore Paper and Darren of The Arty Plantsman. Roda has recently decided to dedicate herself entirely to her Apiary. We wish her happiness and success in all of her projects.
The third wednesday of each month you can see outfits styled by me, and art from Lisa, that were inspired by Darren’s flower pictures and the critter pictures of photographers who collaborate with the team. With the spirit of protecting nature I pull together my outfits with clothing already available in my wardrobe. When purchases are to be made, these come from vintage shops and thrift stores or from socio-eco-friendly brands.
Enjoy the issue!

A perfect day for me involved a curl up in bed or on the sofa with a good book. I am an eclectic reader, and enjoy getting lost in a fiction story as well as being challenged by thoughtful writing. One of my favourite books as a child was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. I particularly liked the fantasy characters such as the Cheshire-cat. I mean who wouldn’t want to be able to disappear once in a while and leave a smile behind them? I know I would.
Here’s my fashion interpretation of…

Love the quote and Lisa’s artwork. The Cattails that are growing in the ditches along the roads bring back lots of souvenirs from my childhood. This plant assume an essential ecological role by filtering organic debris. It stands guard. One can easily imagine a creature gushing from the ditches…
A white tiger, maybe?
I did enjoy Aravind Adiga’s novel The White Tiger, especially the originality of an antihero fiction. And I do have a huge crush for graphic lines and patterns. The Damascena is by the way among my favourite florals.

The White Tiger & Damascena CollageWhiteTigerandDamascena

Recently, I wore an outfit inspired by these two species. The picture was taken by Darren and that day we couldn’t stop giggling like monkeys. See his post Behind the scenes with 3C Style if you want to know more about what happened on that day. It will make you chuckle.

I like to laugh. A lot! Even on Mondays. Seriously, it’s the Sunday nights that are difficult for me. Although, just like Jim Davis’ famous cat I am very found of pizza and lasagna.

For this look I wanted to let the pattern of the blouse and the accessories stand out. I simply paired my blouse with some of my wardrobe staples: jeans, block heel booties, a hat and a vintage coat._MG_0775_MG_0766

Calochortus Talmiei

Cat ears collage8

In the same family as the previous flower, there is this floral beauty called Calochortus talmiei, which name means Cat ears! How cute is that? We couldn’t resisted to add it to our November Issue. Lisa was inspired by it. She drew earrings as the flower then added them digitally on my photo and adorned my handbag with some too.

Greebo & Allium elburzenseGreeboAlliumBook

I have a soft spot for strange characters, real and fiction. Greebo could easily be one of them. Now, if this cat from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books was a plant he probably be an Allium elburzense according to The Arty Plantsman, a botanical expert. I like that flower from the Onion family even if every times I chop such vegetable… I cry!

This is a low-contrast outfit consisting of neutral colours in the grey-beige family. A sophisticated faux-fur hat brings a touch of glam Retro to the look.
This edition is far from being complete as we only focused on a few cat characters in literature but we couldn’t leave out the clever feline of Charles Perreault. Here’s my fashion interpretation of Puss and Boots…

How to wear The Fashioned by Nature Cat T-shirts

    1. A good book always deserves to be read more than once. We discover new things at each reading. I wish I had kept my old Alice book. There were some notes that I had written in it. I would love to be able to read them now that I’m an adult. Thanks for your lovely comment as always. xoxo

  1. This is wonderful Dominique! You look so beautiful in the light from the snow but I wish I was there to take those pictures. We did laugh a lot on that day in St Eustache! I miss you so much.
I can definitely picture you reading with a kitten curled up next to you. My favourite outfit is the allium/greebo one. That hat really suits you 🙂
So proud of the designs our team is producing. Seeing them presented like that shows just how diverse they are and is a real testament to our strengths as a team.
    Love and hugs. x

    1. I agree with you. Our products show how diverse we all are and yet we are so much alike too. It is probably one of the reasons we work so well together. I’m still amaze we met on WP and became such good friends and business partners. This would be a good story for WordPress. I can’t wait to do another shoot with you Darren. I know you don’t like cold but you would love the snow and our bright blue sky in winter. February, perhaps? I can make you a hot coco and cup cake to warm you up. Miss you too! 😍💕

  3. As I said to Darren, I think these photos are absolutely wonderful; the balance of fashion and nature’s colour palette is just perfect! Plus the pic of the kitten in the book is just about the most adorable thing I think I’ve ever seen. Your hug sent via Darren gratefully received and right back at you – you guys are doing an amazing job :O) x

    1. Awww, thank you again for your kind words Lisa. This means a lot to me. You’re right, the picture of the kitten in the book is adorable. The thumbnail that accompanied the photo mentioned that it was the most beautiful bookmark ever seen. I thought the same thing. Happy Friday!

  4. Fabulous! Is that the Thai scarf you told me about?? It’s beautiful, I love the colour. And just finished The White Tiger – a great book and couldn’t put it down. Really love your collaboration, the fashion and photos are just brilliant! 🙂 xx

    1. Hello Gill. Yes, it’s the scarf that my husband bought for me on his last trip to Bangkok. Teal is my signature colour. I’m so glad he remembered. I have another scarf similar to this one but in red. These Jim Thompson’s scarves are so well woven. They are real works of art. The White Tiger is not the kind of book I usually like to read. But I did enjoyed it. Such readings remind me of how lucky I am to be born in Canada. Thank you so much Gill for your lovely words. I am so grateful to be part of this team. Our collaboration and friendship means a lot to me. xoxo

  7. Another great post Domonique. You look really great in all the outfits and its good to get some ideas. Love all the hats, I was looking for one yesterday, winter always seems to demand the purchase of a hat but often that’s as far as I get and unless it’s a bobble hat I often buy one then rarely wear it. I need to change that!! Glad Ive had time to sit and read this this evening. x

    1. Thank you Alison. I wanted to make a post on winter hats. But I’m a little busy these days. I do not think I’ll have time. I hope you and your family are doing well. Have a lovely week ahead. xoxo

  8. Another gem! The colors are outstanding. I especially love you in that green scarf. Against your hair, that color is sublime. I also love that Fendi bag that Lisa embellished. Sooo cool! Leave it to Darren to find a flower whose name means Cat’s Ears! And it’s a beauty, too!

    1. He made us laugh, Lisa and I, when he revealed the name of this flower. We were under the spell by the beauty of the Cat’s Ears! What are the odds of finding another plant with a cat name reference? And yet there was: the Cattails! A plant in front of which I was photographed two months earlier by Darren himself. When I asked Darren to take a photo of me with the cattails he smiled. Because I was willing to go in the ditch along the road with my feet in the water just to get a pic with this strange brown plant. I didn’t know at the time that the plant was called “cattails” in English. I didn’t know either that we would be doing a special about cats for our November edition. I just knew I had an urgent desire to be photographed with the cattails. A happy coincidence, I guess. Except, there are some more cat related coincidences to the story. It would be too long to write about it in a comment but I might eventually tell the rest of this story. I’m actually waiting to see if something else will happen…

    1. Thank you. I like “simple” too, but always with a twist. In this case, it was the mix of textures: vintage leather & silk. I’m in Aww with Lisa’s artwork. She is indeed so talented and creative. The EyeCATching T-shirt is one more proof to this. Thanks for your lovely comment, Alan. Hope your day is going well so far.

  9. Hello gorgeous, love this again you have an awesome article. I love cats too and Alice in Wonderland Oh my goodness I dreamt about that story as a child and still the book fascinates me now with the quotes that I adore so much to learn and interpret from that story. You look a million dollars in all your outfits. Love them and the love the artwork and all the work you three are putting together. Amazing job to all of you. Have a lovely weekend xoxo Cris

  10. I am convinced that our mutual love of cats is one of the reasons we are so compatible! 🐱 It definitely can’t be based on my sense of fashion!! 😂😂

    1. During your visit to Montreal, I noticed that we were attracted by the same subjects of photos. We also always made the same choices of dishes in the restaurant. We seem indeed to have many affinities. But what I appreciate the most about you is your sense of humor, your generosity, your quick wit, your respect for others and your open-mindedness… This make you a pretty purrfect person to be friend with. Moew!

  11. You had me at cat. 😉😻 I’m a total cat person I have to admit, although of course I also like dogs. But cats and me we simply click, you know? It’s true love every time on both sides I believe! 😄
These outfits are fantastic and I’m just in love with the look of you blending so perfectly into nature with that magnificent silk scarf and leather jacket – just like the Cheshire cat! 😉 And I remember that lovely pic of the kitten as a bookmark from an earlier post – it’s just perfect. 😄
And how I love those tiger prints! It’s a good thing they’re fashionable once again. 😉
Beautiful collaboration from all three of you again – you guys really rock! 😍

    1. I knew you were also a “Cat Lady” since we had already talked about it. Another point that we have in common. I also love tiger prints. The photo with the zebra trench is one of my favorites. Not only do I really like this trench coat, but it was Darren who took the picture. The photo was taken in the village where I grew up. It was special to bring Darren to this historic village and share anecdotes of my childhood with him. Thank you so much for your kind words Sarah. You make me purr… Sending a huge hug your way. 😻

And you and Darren really team up so well, one would think you were doing these shoots for years!! Can´t wait for him to visit you again so we get to see all those wonderful moments you´ve shared! 😀
