When Fashion And Nature Collide – The Aroma of Books

#FashionedbyNature #WhenFashionAndNatureCollide #AromaofBooks

Aaah, the smell of a new book! I would honestly wear it as a perfume if I could. Seriously, that’s why I’m not a huge fan of eBooks. Try pressing your nose against an iPad and see what you get!
My nose in a book = The Language of Flower (must be read aloud in a stereotypical hack French accent—“flao-WAEHR”)

IMG_0839

As a child, I would often put my favorite flowers in my books and let them dry. I still remember the scent of the roses and lavender, which continue to inspire me to this day. In fact, these two beautiful scents serve as the basis for this month’s featured fashion. We also have two ensembles based around aloe.

I’d love for you to get nosy and pick through our August looks, all inspired by the aromas of lavender, roses and aloe. Hopefully, you have time to do the digging, and bonus points if you caught all three nosepick jokes.
Note: In case you’ve not seen these capsules before, the When Fashion and Nature Collide project is a monthly collaboration with two of my WP friends: Lisa of Lismore Paper and Darren of The Arty Plantsman. Our team also create designs for our shop at Fashionedbynature.threadless.com Artwork Copyright ©Fashioned by Nature.
The third Wednesday of each month you can see outfits styled by me, and art from Lisa and Darren, that were inspired by Darren’s flower and critter pictures, and sometimes Lisa, myself or other photographers who collaborate with the team. With the spirit of protecting nature I pull together my outfits with clothing already available in my wardrobe. When purchases are to be made, these come from vintage boutiques and thrift stores or from socio-eco-friendly brands.
Enjoy the issue!

Floral patterning is fashionista fallback look number one. Not everyone likes floral patterns, but if you do, the two outfits I have in mind from these rose pics should get your juices flowing!
For the first outfit, I have styled a 9 to 5 Fall look. A white skirt mixed with a beige knit and nude pumps features a button set that can open up and show the legs after work. Vintage ’50s Dior original fabric literally ties the look together at the waist with a floral brocade belt. If you’re looking for a creative subtlety to your floral patterning, this is your look.

#Roses #ArtworkIMG_1233-HR

Thank you Elena B. Chartier for giving me this beautiful fabric that inspired me to create this belt. Lisa and I are working on an art project at the moment and this fabric is our primary source of inspiration. Stay tuned!

Elaine from ERA Vintage Wear gives us a modern take on a fairy-tale classic with this vintage fabric white organza dress. This second look is definitely an outfit for a red carpet occasion. The organza fabric models the petals of a rose. I just added black sandals and a vintage embroidery black bag.

My friend Lisa have pattern her mix media artwork with Darren’s photos of the roses and one of my pic. You can see her work title The Grace of a Rose on her blog (link below).

Lavender Inspiration

#Frameartwork #Lavender #FashionInLavenderField

The smell of lavender always triggers nice memories of my childhood, and Darren’s lavender artwork reminds me of these peaceful moments. I wanted my outfit to reflect that feeling. So here’s another vintage strapless dress with a fairy feel (also from ERA Vintage Wear), but this one is simpler. I think the look is perfect for a wedding where you want to look outstanding without standing out (and overshadowing the bride). Sugar hues are again very trendy this Fall, and the lavender color is simply amazing. I have styled this girly dress with leopard pumps to give it some edge.

Have you noticed the bee in the pic above? The chipper little critter kept turning around me. I guess it wanted to keep the lavender for itself.

Aloe Inspiration

#AloeInspiration

I’m so glad more people associate green with the positive aspects of an eco-friendly life rather than negative feelings of envy. This green can actually wow people as a total look or be mix with earth tones such as navy, gray or sandy beige. From New York, London, Milan and Paris, the Fall/Winter 2019 runways featured lots of green hues. Apart from tint of aloe green, expect to see pistachio, emerald, Granny Smith apple green and deep forest shades all over the streets this next autumn.
#AloeGreen #ColorAjustedIMG_0967IMG_1039IMG_0993IMG_1035
I feel like a gem whenever I’m wearing this color! A floral accent (in this case a silk belt) brighten the look. A green snake skin vintage tiny purse complete the outfit and gives it more texture.

Green for Interior Decor

Green is a relaxing color to the eye and its freshness induces a natural atmosphere of harmony and peace. Use this color in your interior decor especially when you want to create a calming retreat. In her shop, the sustainable designer Elaine Léveillé used a variety of greens and earth tones to make her white walls shine and inspire a fresh and relaxing atmosphere.

These photos were taken by Darren on his last trip to Montreal while we were visiting my friend Elaine at her boutique. Yes, I had my hair cut since then. I included these pictures in this edition of When Fashion And Nature Collide because they fit so well with Darren’s Aloe artsy photography.

  1. What a fabulous post. So much to love in each of these themes. But firstly, I can relate to having my nose in a book. I think I’ve had mine in a book almost my entire life. Certainly as a little girl it was my absolute favourite thing to lose myself in. These days I love my kindle and yes, I know it mightn’t smell as nice, but it has some definite pros!! 🙂 As for all the looks, fashion and artwork, well, just so gorgeous. Love the belt in your first outfit, very swanky and I think the lavender is dreamy. So very pretty. Maybe my favourite are the bold green colours in the last set. Yes, you’re a gem Dominique, in fact you all three are. Wonderful effort!

    1. Awe -Thank you Miriam. Funny that you would mention the green outfit as this shade is my signature color. Anything in green catches my attention, especially if it is Teal. I have not try kindle yet… Bought a book but I wonder if I will ever read it. I am an hopeless romantic. I need to feel the book in my hands. “Rolls eyes” Although, I can see why you like it. Definitely is a more eco-friendly approach. You are so sweet. Have a nice evening!

    2. I do still love my ‘real’ books too. And big ones. But the kindle is so light that when I read in bed and fall asleep and it drops on me, it’s not heavy and doesn’t shock me! Lol 😉 I can see why you love teal so much. It’s gorgeous. Happy Wednesday my friend. xx

  2. So wonderful to see this fantastic post published Dominique. We seem to have been talking about it for ages 🙂

I love all the looks and I also like the new hair cut. Happy memories too from ERA vintage 🙂 I miss you and Montreal and can’t wait to come back.

So glad you got the white dress, but I also love the lavender one and you look so beautiful in those pictures.

Lisa and I have said this before, I know, but your eye for composition in those collages, and your flat-lays, is truly outstanding too!

    1. Miss you too! And I can’t wait to see you and Lisa. I never thought that I would say this but making the photo collages is fun, but what I truly prefer creating are artistic flatlays, especially when it is with you. Remember our Apple flatlay? And our Guide to edible flower flavors? It was so much fun. Imagine what we could do if we did it with Lisa’s keen eye. I am also very proud of our team work. You two are the best!

    2. Of course I recall doing those flatlays. They were terrific fun and yes, with Lisa I am confident we work wonders. I remember our joy and amazement at how good the photos looked when we first looked at them and we could not wait to send them to Lisa. We do make a great team! xx

    3. I want to do something with these pictures. I love them so much. The remind me of so many pleasant memories. Perhaps I’ll do another post with the When Fashion and Food Collide theme? I can’t wait to do more of these creative projects with you and Lisa. Good luck with the wallpapering this weekend!

  3. The smell of a new book! I simply love it! I often find myself going into a bookshop just to feel the smell 🙂 Too good 🙂 I used to put flowers in my books and let them dry too and then I used to forget about them and what a surprise when I found them again 🙂
I love the roses inspiration! I like soo much the colors!
Of course the bee wanted to keep the lavender for himself 🙂 The smell is too good 🙂
I love the earth tones and this green is awesome! It makes you feel so near the nature and relaxed 🙂
You look gorgeous Dominique and the photographs are stunning! Great job you all! 🙂

  4. There is so much to love about this edition. Stunning fashion, flowers, photography, and that dress! Your keen eye like Darren said makes this outstanding. I had so much fun creating this with you and Darren. I am always excited to read your posts as the same content turns out so different. I couldn’t agree with you more on the aroma of books! Love to you sis! Such an outstanding month, fashion, fun, and friendship. I am so very proud of you both 💗

    1. How fascinating that each brings its own color even if the general theme and content are shared. The effect of our different perspectives is somewhat similar to that of a kaleodoscope. Love it! It is such a pleasure to work with both of you. I am also very proud of our work and sooo excited by our next month collaboration! Much love sis. xoxo

  6. My goodness, Dominique, you and Lisa must be the busiest ladies on earth! Such a wonderful collection of fashions you have put together with the help of your friend, Elaine. Did you feel calm in your gorgeous lavender dress and among all those flowers? And the white organza! Like floating on a cloud.
I love greens. My engagement ring is a beautiful emerald, much the same colour as your shirt and I have two rooms decorated in blues and green. Always in fashion IMO.
Such beautiful styling, Dominique. I love your creativity and ethos. You, Darren and Lisa are such a fab team. Congrats on this edition.

    1. Hello Tracy! So nice of you to stop by, and what a lovely comment. Lisa and I are very busy indeed… So as Darren. Our monthly collaboration surely keeps us on our toes. But we enjoy creating together and it is comments like this one that keep us going. Thank you so much for your support.
The day of the photo shoot in the lavender field was not as pleasant as it looks. It was a very hot and humid day so very challenging to stay fresh and relax. I like the analogy you used to describe the white organza dress. I agree. This piece is so dreamlike, ethereal. Green is my favourite color. Any shades of green is good to me. My bedroom is also decorated in a mix of green and soft blues! And I have green accents through out the house. Thank you so much for your support.

  7. It never surprises me whenever you showcase your talents of mixing and matching. I do reserve the right to have the wow factors. The lavender shots are super in the lens. Your outfit was just perfect for those pics. Is that lavender there near you in Montreal? Also, I love the shade of your green top. I have a shirt just about the same shade. You were striking wearing that color and combinations. The white dress with the white Rose was perfect. Very frilly. You always choose well. Hugs for you and your magic.

    1. Hi Alan, the lavender field is located about 35 minutes from Montreal and near of my father’s house. St-Eustache is an historical village and a lovely place to live. I love all shades of green, but especially Teal. Thanks so much for your heartfelt words. You are always so kind to me. Hugs. 💜🌿

    1. That green shirt would look amazing on you… With your green eyes and your red hair that would definitely be a head turner! Wearing heels is pretty much like riding a bike. Learn it once and you are set for life. After that, you just have to keep going to stay in balance. 😍

    1. You have good taste Dawn: a white cardigan over the shoulders would had been lovely. It was so warm and humid that day though. Honestly, I just wanted to throw myself into a pool. 🤪🦋 Thank you for visiting. It’s always nice to have you here.

  9. Yay!! A new edition of my favourite bloggers’ joined venture! 😄 Always feels a little bit like Christmas. 😉
I so agree about real books being preferable to electronic ones and not just because of the smell but also because their battery will never run out – lol! 😄 Also love the smell of freshly roasted coffee. 😄
The outfits and photos are all gorgeous! Your new haircut looks fantastic – I was thinking of having my haircut the same way but haven’t found the courage yet. 😄
Love the floral patterned belt! Sadly I’ve developed an allergy to lavender, I used to love it so much. But at least I can still admire the colour. 😊
All in all a fabulous post and I look forward to read Lisa’s and Darren’s! 💕

    1. Hi Sarah,
Sorry for taking so long to reply. It’s a little crazy at work at the moment. The fabric of this floral print belt is truly beautiful. I have a weakness for sumptuous fabric and I end up buying more than I can sow. This one was given to me though and it is a work of art! I am slowly getting used to my new hairstyle. I like it because I do not need to do my hair in the morning. The disheveled look suits me perfectly. I also like ponytails and buns (my usual look), but I’ll have to wait a long time before I can do it again. My son has longer hair than me now! Poor you! Being allergic to lavender is sad. But it could be worst if it was to peanuts. You like the smell of coffee! It’s part of our WFNC October’s theme. Thanks for your wonderful comment my friend. xoxo
