When Fashion And Nature Collide: The Camouflage Edition

#Cover #WFNC #Blog #Camouflage #NovemberIn nature’s animals, camouflage is the first line of defense against predators and the best tactic on offense to catch some breakfast.
For you fashion animals, camouflage is a great first impression on the unsuspecting crowd and one of the best strategies for getting what you want out of your target.
Camofashion means you’re seen when you want to be seen and others see only what you want seen. Still following me? Good! But if you’re thinking this is tough to pull off, you’re not wrong. Mixing a beautiful background blend with a proper pop is a feat sometimes best left to the professionals. With this in mind (I’m professional! My mom told me), I’d love to present you with this month’s fashion inspirations, all taken from the natural camouflage we (don’t) see all around us.

The Inspiration: Stink Bug, Spider, Birch Tree, Hawkmoth, and Peppered Moth

Let’s start with a little game of hide and seek…

BTW no, I’m not doing camo this month because I woke up on photoshoot day with a huge pimple on my chin. Nor did I frantically freak out to my friends Khalida and Darren to depimple me with makeup and Photoshop, respectively. I honestly don’t know where you heard that, secondly how dare you, and remember, rumors give you tumors. 😂
Seriously, I’m doing camo because I find the phenomenon fascinating.

Note: In case you’ve not seen these capsules before, the When Fashion and Nature Collide project is a monthly collaboration with two of my WP friends: Lisa from Lismore Paper and Darren from The Arty Plantsman. Our team also create designs for our shops at Fashionedbynature.threadless.com and Cafepress.co.uk/fashionedbynature Artwork Copyright ©Fashioned by Nature.
The third Wednesday of each month you can see outfits styled by me, and art from Lisa and Darren, that were inspired by Darren’s flower and critter pictures, and sometimes Lisa, myself or other photographers who collaborate with the team. With the spirit of protecting nature I pull together my outfits with clothing already available in my wardrobe. When purchases are to be made, these come from vintage boutiques and thrift stores or from socio-eco-friendly brands.
On to the outfits!

The Peppered Moth & Birch Tree

#Pepperedmoth #Photocollage #artBlack and white is the best thing going since… well, since white and black. There’s honestly nothing like it if you’re trying to bring attention to the depth and texture of the material. I offset this classic camo blend with a baseline grey boot and gold purse clamp that take on new dimensions when accessorised on good old B&W. You can get similar results through a zebra pattern, stripes or checks. Personally, I just wanted to pay homage to the birch tree and moth patterns. The top from Era Vintage Wear helped me achieved that. Check out Lisa’s Peppered Birch art —stunning!

The Hawkmoth & Stink Bug

#stinkbug #HawkmothWhen combined, the humble proclivities of two of nature’s less outspoken citizens provide us with a powerful earthen look. Using the dark browns of the hawkmoth as a base for my slip dress and vintage jacket draws positive attention to the extremities of the body. Green boots (a DIY paint job of mine) set off with a bit of green eyeshadow raises the outfit from imp to nymph and keeps all classy eyes on us!

The Spider

#SpiderA bit of orange under a leopard pattern will definitely help you stand out without you actually having to stand out. There are some color patterns that just command visual attention, and most of them come from our friends in nature.
#Spider #WP_MG_1736Have you been overlooking your next great look that has been literally hiding under your nose? There’s more than meets the eye in everything nature has to offer us! I hope that my creations have given you something to think about this month. Feel free to take advantage of our ideas here and get in touch if you have some that you’d like me to help you out with!

  1. I love the outfits this month Dominique. They have a perfect feel for this time of year and the theme this month is a cool one too! I confess I especially like the spider outfit because of the colours.
As always, your writing is fun and engaging too – I always look forward to reading your posts. Have a good and productive break over the holidays my friend. X

    1. Thank you so much Darren. I like the spider outfit too. This colorful critter was inspiring. The camouflage effect is great with Lisa’s birch tree and your Peppered moth. We all have so much to do for our FBN shops and respective projects that this short break will come handy. Hugs and love! xx

  2. What a fabulous and fun post Dominique. Camofashion is a new concept for me but I love what you three came up with this month. Your amazing outfits, Darren’s critters and Lisa’s gorgeous birch tree art combine to make another stunning edition. Well done. xx

    1. Hi Miriam! Camofashion usually refers to military-inspired fashion, which looks like the hawkmoth’s pattern. Thanks you for your lovely comment. Every month, I’m excited to see our collaborative project in its integrity. Lisa and Darren never cease to impress me.

    1. I was so busy at work today. I couldn’t even reply to the comments on my lunch break. Almost everyone seems to like the spider outfit best. Thank you Lisa for your compliment. Coming from you it is a huge honor. You are so inspiring and fun to work with. We do have a lot of work to do during our holiday break but I’m excited too because we should come back with great news for our WP friends. Love you sis. xoxo

BRAVO super camoufleuse. Ume edition absolument remarquable. J’adore 😍

  5. So good to see your work again, Dominique. I adore Birch. You with the Birch trunk was a fabulous mix. I had to expand some shots to really see the critters. Very Autumn. Very pleasant views. Hoping you are well. My hugs & God’s grip – Alan

    1. Hi Alan! You are always so encouraging. Thank you for your kind words and support. Yes, I noticed that some of the critters were unfortunately too small in the final layout. I am okay, slowly getting my strength back. Looking forward to the Christmas break. Hugs from cold Montreal.

    1. Thank you Su. It is a fun project to do indeed. I am always very curious to read Darren and Lisa’s posts to see how they have interpreted their own version of our agreed theme.

  6. I definitely enjoyed this one! I look at nature and think, who on earth dressed you? Then, I realise, it works!!! In one of my favorite books, ‘Girl of the Limberlost’, a character dresses like an Imperial moth for a fancy ball.

    1. Smiling.
When you look at some insects, you just wonder. Yellow feet, black legs, striped bodies, and iridescent eyes. With feelers that often have colored tips or are even feathered!

  7. This is one of my favorite WFNC installments. There is some sort of voodoo at work in that you got a pimple on the day of a camouflage photoshoot. It’s one of those funny/not funny kind of situations. I love the colors, I love you being almost invisible in the leaves and mostly, I love your joie de vivre! 🤗💕🤗💕🤗

    1. You are so sweet Linda. Thank you. Yes, definitely some sort of voodoo at work here. Thankfully, with the help of my friends I was able to fix that annoying situation with style —almost, I did say a few bad words! xoxo

  8. I always look forward to your posts. You guys are so clever and creative. I especially love your green boots. The birch tree makes an absolutely stunning backdrop. I shall need to find an orange top to go with my leopard coat. Any excuse for a shopping trip…

    1. Hey, Brigid! How are you? Thanks so much for your lovely comment. You are always so kind and encouraging. You won’t have any problem finding an orange top… This color is everywhere this season. You can also mix your leopard print with red and pastels, and even with stripes and floral. Have fun!

    1. Hi Tracy. I definitely had fun doing these photo shoots. Lots of laugh trying to find ways to hide that pimple. Lol I still have a few posts to publish before taking my break but I look forward to celebrating the holidays. Thanks for stopping by.

  9. Aahh! I can’t decide!! All the outfits look so fabulous!!! 😂 But I have a huge crush on the green boots (awesome paint job!!! Wanna hear details!), and the spider outfit (although I’m really, really not a fan of spiders – there’s just one exception: Spiderman! 😉 )
Love the concept of camoufashion! It always makes so much sense to draw ideas from nature and I’ve a soft spot for animal prints. 😉 The various photos from your photoshoots are amazing!! I love how you’re hiding in plain sight among the leaves! 😀 Such a wonderful post, my friend! Like always I can’t get enough of them and always look forward to the next one… and the next… and the next!! 😉 Much love!

    1. Aww —Thanks so much, Sarah! So glad you enjoyed this post. It’s such fun sharing some of my fashion inspiration with you and the others and to see what you all prefer. The paint job is really easy. 1) Prepare your shoes or boots for painting. You can use a little bit of acetone to remove the waxy finish and dirt. 2) Use masking tape to mask off any areas that you do not want to paint. 3) Use spray paint for leather. Spray lightly with sweeping motion. Several thin coats will wear better than fewer thick coats. Allow each coat to dry 1 hour between applications. 4) You can apply a protection to preserve your paint job. That way you can also give your shoes or boots a matte or glossy surface. 5) After the final coat is applied, let dry at least 2 hours before removing the masking tape. Et voilà! You have new shoes or boots. That’s not too difficult. But you need to be patient and let dry between applications. That’s the most important part of this paint job. You won’t have any problem with that —I know that you are a very patient person. 😂 Thanks again for your fantastic comment as always. Hugs and love dear friend. xoxo

    1. Hey Dee-Dee! I did the first part of the climbing accreditation today. It went well. I’ll practice a bit and take some pictures for you next week. BTW, Darren told me that he can come to Montreal around the end of May. Hope you and Dennis will be able to make the trip too. Hopefully, Lisa, Linda and Bill will too. That would be awesome to see you all.

    2. The part one is dedicated to climbing block. Next week, I will do bouldering. If I get the accreditation I will be aloud to practice on the wall. That’s my goal since the proper bouldering lessons only start in February. Wish me luck.

    3. For the moment, I’m a member of the Cepsum, an university gym that is located only 5 minutes from my home. It is a bit too noisy for my taste but its location is very practical. I like it because I can swim there, play badminton with my son and use the gym. I was wondering about the lessons… Hopefully, I’ll be able to practice on the wall and I’ll see if I need the lessons or not. I have no intention of climbing Mount Leman so like you said I might not need to. But I would like to be able to climb in any gym with you when you come and visit. 😍

    4. All you need is to get belay certified, and you are good to go!! So exciting!!
I will talk to my daughter this Christmas about a good time to visit her in Chicago, then we can make plans to hit up Montreal!!!💕

    1. I get it, Tony. Sometimes, I feel like that too. I would become quickly exhausted if I wasn’t capable of fading into the background in some situations… You know, slip away from all of the noise. Sending hugs from cold Montreal.

  10. Well, the collaboration this month, did not disappoint! The outfits look stunning.. And I love the Camouflage effect they project. I did think the white skirt was too dominating for camoflage but indicated the approach of winter.
You look beautiful as always, Dom (you didn’t need to mention pimples… not noticeable). Your makeup is very flattering to you. But it was not able to hide your tiredness… You look truly exhausted. I hope you are not trying to do too much. Take time for you… Make your life more enjoyable. Sometimes, no matter how much we camouflage ourselves, it doesn’t help us stay strong. Keep well, and have a peaceful and cosy Christmas love., ❤️

    1. You have, again, amazed me with your insight Colette. Yes, I am very tired at the moment. It’s been a very busy Autumn. Thankfully, I will get two weeks off work during Christmas and I intend to do some skying and reading. That should get me my energy level back on track. 🙂 BTW Huge thanks for the awesome comment that you left on Lisa’s blog regarding your lifestyle. Sooo inspiring. I hope you have a nice and warm holiday season. Much love! 😍
