The Do’s and Don’ts of Car Maintenance for Fashionistas!

Aww… That new car fresh scent, clean with leather redolence. I wish our 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan had such pleasant smell. A great engine though. Its 200 horsepower is more than capable of handling the all-wheel-drive. Backed up by four-wheel disc brakes with ABC and traction control, the SUV displayed good grip on slippery surfaces. Perfect for Quebec’s weather! Since my hubby and I do not intend to buy a new car any time soon, I HAD to do something about our comfort (read: the odour). The scent of school gym locker isn’t appropriate for a fashionista, for no one as a matter of fact.
I wanted to start 2018 on the right track. So I had the interior and exterior of our car deep cleaned: trash out the nook, vacuum, shampoo the seats, scrub the mats, clean the wheels, even paid for a wax job… A complete make over! Our car looks like a million bucks and I want to keep it that way. So I decide “I” would for now on take care of our car maintenance. (Sorry darling! You still have the power over the BBQ.)
In order to do a good job, I made a list of all the important things to remember. Although the list is made mainly for myself and my fashionista friends, some of you might be interested in it too. With no further ado, here is my Top 12 Car Maintenance for Fashionistas. The Do’s and Don’ts and some tips to keep your vehicle tidy and assure you a pleasant drive!
  1. Do make regular appointments with your garage in order to keep your car in good condition. (After all, you do see your hairdresser and beautician more than once every two years, right? Apart from saving money in the long run, your car will appreciate the gesture and in return it will make it possible for you to go shopping whenever you want);
  2. Do get a car maintenance log template to help you remember things like when you had your vehicle’s oil changed. Pinterest has plenty of those available that you can download for free;
  3. Don’t hesitate to learn how to change a car tire (Because you don’t want to have to pull up your skirt on the highway in order to get some help from a man who might only wish to get you in the back of his or your car. I’m not saying that there are no kind and generous men out there but if you are like me “not a very patient person” it is better not to take a chance);
  4. Do have a collapsible bin in the trunk of your car And always have grocery recycle bags, overalls and a pair of gloves in it. (You don’t want to get all dirty and chip your nails whenever you’ll have to do the job yourself.) Oh, BTW here’s a stylish pair of overalls that you might want to get (I know I will);
  5. Do deep clean your car every three months and if you have young kids take your car weekly to the carwash (You take a daily shower or bath, right? Your car needs to freshen up too. Plus, a good shine is important for fashionistas to check their reflection when approaching the car in a new outfit);
  6. Do get a small wastebasket and a box of tissue (SO much easier to keep your car clean and useful to wipe your tears away if you missed a 50% off sale from your favorite store);
  7. Don’t hesitate to invest in a good quality freshener (Because the smell of old food stuck between the seats is bad. For a fashionista it is deadly!) But please don’t go for the sickly sweet scent fresheners such as grape crush. It will give you a headache. Go instead for the coconut, vanilla or leather scent. Much more enjoyable and definitely a sign of style. Here are two of my favorite car scent products. I really like the Coconut Fragrance from Kube Scent Car Air Freshener and Perk Fresh Link “New Car” scent (these are the only two smells both my hubby and I can agree on);
  8. Don’t put make-up while you’re driving (It is as dangerous as texting and driving! BTW for those of you who are just starting to follow my blog, you might want to read my post Texting and walking is Stupid!) Come to think of it: Don’t put make-up in the car at all, even if you are not driving. At least, not mascara. (Do I need to elaborate on the possible danger for your beautiful eyes?);
  9. Do get a car care kit For fashionistas emergency such as Eugh! Lint on my coat. For example, you shall keep in the kit: a lint roller, a stain remover, nail polish, wipes, nylon stocking, hand cream, charger for cellphone. (We are always in need of a good selfie, don’t you agree?);
  10. Do select a woman’s voice on your GPS or phone App (Girl Power! Seriously, if the default voice is not female don’t hesitate to switch. You don’t want a man giving you any directions. Not much mileage in it. 90% of the time it will get you lost. Not their fault, it’s in their genes. Do I need to remind you that millions of sperms get lost and never make it to the egg!);
  11. Don’t forget to check if your hubby did put the Thule roof-rack on top of the car before getting into the garage’s mall (If you forgot and get stuck, see point 12);
  12. Have at hand the number of CAA or any other good towing services (Yep! Just in case any incident like point 11 happen. Trust me, you don’t want to call your husband or boyfriend for help. Sure, many years later you’ll enjoy joking about it but before that you’ll hear him rambling on and on “One time she went…” NahYou don’t want to go down that road.)

    1. I don’t have a gps…..I use google map from my phone and who speak is a nice American lady who doesn’t take it personally when I insult her because I manage to get wrong road anyway😂

    2. Ha, ha… I do the same! One day they may program the voice to reply to our insults though… Something like: Oh yeah, well get lost! Until then, let’s keep managing our frustration.

  1. This is really helpful advice. Thank you! I like the comparison of washing our car regularly to bathing ourselves regularly. On the one hand, that is such clear and simple advice, but it is something I don’t think a lot about. Thank you.

  2. What a beautiful 2-piece! Where do I buy it? And I love the phrase “We, fashionistas, always make sure to dress appropriately for every occasion… The worst thing that can happen is that we blend in.” Exactly!

    1. He sure has a great voice! I think Google did add Freeman’s voice to its free navigation app a few years ago in order to promote one of Freeman’s action film.
